Congratulations, you’ve secured your place at University! Now, on to the next step — finding your accommodation. As exciting as it is, this can also leave some feeling a little overwhelmed. Let us take away some of that pressure and talk you through our perfect student accommodation tips to help you find your home away from home.
Type of Student Accommodation
Have you considered private accommodation? For some, living on campus and being thrown into a new environment is an exciting prospect. For others, this can throw them completely out of their comfort zone — and that’s OK! Having your own space comes with a plethora of positives. The first step in finding your perfect accommodation is identifying which of these environments suits you best.
Booking
Your second step is to start booking. Popular student accommodations have a well-known reputation for getting booked up very quickly. To avoid disappointment, we recommend securing your room as soon as possible. You can check availability for on-campus living and Halls of Residence through the University of Derby website. For private accommodation, we recommend setting up alerts with local rental sites. This is useful with keeping you updated with any new listings as soon as they become available.
budget
An important factor to consider when securing your accommodation, is your budget. Setting a weekly budget is essential in deciding what accommodation to choose. Take note that Halls of Residence can vary in price, so it’s important to find out if the initial price shown to you is with bills included. Don’t make the mistake of not finding that out before you book.
Location
The location of your accommodation is also something to consider. If you’re the type to have any fear of missing out, then living in the city centre is ideal for you. You’ll be amongst the hustle and bustle the lively city of Derby has to offer. You’ll also have an easy commute to your lectures and classes — a huge plus when you’ve been out with friends the night before! Read more about what Derby has to offer in our blog.
Safety
Last on the list of our perfect accommodation tips, is safety. Whatever accommodation you choose, it’s important to know how you’ll be kept safe. For example, check for working fire doors and exits, fire alarms and regular appliance checks and what safety locks are used. You should also take note of how these safety locks operate, is it a key fob access system or the traditional lock and key? The biggest question to ask yourself is: ‘Do I feel secure enough to relax and leave my possessions in that space?’ If the answer is no, then it’s not the right place for you.
At Marlix, the design of the building incorporates several crime prevention measures, ensuring a safe and secure environment for every resident. When the reception is not open, there is always a member of staff on call for emergencies. An external security provider also monitors the site and responds to any security concerns. An access control system requires a fob to enter the building and CCTV provides surveillance for both management staff and out of hours security staff, so residents have total peace of mind. Enquiries and reservations are now being taken and we’d love to hear from you!
So, you can see, there is certainly lots to consider when it comes to deciding on your accommodation; the type, the location, what’s included and much more. However, the most important thing is that whichever student accommodation you choose, it’s right for you.
