And let’s not forget, East Midlands airport is a mere 20-minute drive — allowing you world-wide access!
There is also a healthy supply of taxis and bus routes, with most leaving on an average of 10 minutes. In fact, Derby has been ranked one of the top cities for reliable buses. And if you’re conscious of your carbon footprint, or simply want the exercise, the sheer number of cycle routes across this flat, compact city makes it ideal for cyclists.
Social Spots
Living in Derby will undoubtably provide you with an abundance of social spots to choose from. The main shopping centre, Derbion, has a large selection of shops, café’s and restaurants. With entertainment areas such as a cinema, bowling alley and much more.
Especially as a student, we know that brunch is a popular activity. Why not treat yourselves after an exam! Places such as BEAR and Fat Cats offer bottomless drinks and tasty menu’s that will surely satisfy any palette. And if brunch isn’t your thing, there are plenty of sophisticated coffee shops to choose from. Particularly if you fancied a change of scene from the library or a desk, take your laptop along and work somewhere different. It’ll be sure to get that productivity flowing!

If you’re the creative type, then Derby Museums is a honey pot of art, invention and culture waiting to be explored and admired. Derby Museums is an independent charitable trust operating three museums: the Museum and Art Gallery, Museum of Making and Pickford’s House. It has unique cultural assets, with Derby Silk Mill, situated in the Derwent Valley. This is widely regarded as the site of the world’s first modern factory. Derby has a rich cultural heritage, illustrious history, and an ambitious future. It’s currently bidding to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2025. By living in Derby, it’s good to know about the city’s history. Initially a market town, Derby grew rapidly in the industrial era and claims to be one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. In the 19th century, Derby became a centre of the British rail industry.
Outdoor Adventures
The juxtaposition of the hustle and bustle of city life to the scenic beauty of the Peak District also adds to the many perks of living in Derby. You can reach the Peaks in just under an hour’s drive from the city centre. With its storybook villages such as Hathersage, it also has some literary associations after having been visited and enjoyed by Charlotte Brontë.
Just outside the village of Wetton, you’ll find the magnificent Thor’s Cave, a natural cavern set in a steep limestone crag, with its huge arched entrance easily visible (and quite accessible) from the footpath below.
If you’re looking for somewhere closer to home, then Darley Abbey is a beautiful place to explore. With a stunning lake and vast park, it’s undeniably one of the best spots in Derby. The charming old cotton mills are wonderful to walk around and explore, featuring a few wine bars — perfect for a date night or a social hangout. It’s a great place to meet new people too.
