The daunting prospect of leaving home for the first time encompasses the minds of many first-time students. It’s completely normal. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, then this is the checklist for you. Here’s what to take to university to make it your home away from home.
The All-Important Documents
We’ve all been there — rummaging for those all-important documents and not being able to find them when you need them the most. Get yourself a folder to contain all the essential documents you may need. This includes; your passport, your university acceptance letter, accommodation contract, insurance documents, prescription copies and any bank statements. To have all this information in one place will make life a whole lot easier.
We also recommend you take your school certificates as some universities want to make copies when you enrol. Especially if you’re under a conditional offer, you will need proof of meeting entry requirements.
Your Electricals
Of course, you’re not going to leave your phone behind. But there are other electricals that you may forget you need. We recommend you take an extension lead, adapters, USB, your device chargers, batteries, and your laptop and case to name a few. We also suggest looking into a printer as this could save money in the long run depending on what course you’ve applied for. Printer Ink can be pricey, but it may be a lot cheaper than what they charge you at your university!
Homeware and Kitchenware
Now for the fun part. Homeware! Moving into student accommodation means a new space to decorate and make your own. It’s important to make a list of things you want to take. Having it written down and crossing each item on once you’ve got it will make you feel more organised. And by feeling more organised, you will be eliminating unnecessary last-minute stress.
Aside from the obvious such as bedding, towels, and other soft furnishings, you should also consider taking with you a healthy supply of kitchenware. As much as you might try, living on takeaways might not be the best idea for your health, or your bank balance! If you’re going to be sharing accommodation with flatmates, you’ll no doubt end up with multiple toastie-makers, so save the bag space and prioritise the useful things. Take the essentials such as cooking utensils, cutlery and pans to ensure you have everything you need to cook up a storm. It’s also worth noting what cooking appliance you will have — most accommodations will have an induction hob so check your pans will be compatible.
Home Away from Home
Having your own space and independence for the first time is completely freeing. However, with this can come with a sense of uncertainty. Moving away from your home comforts and familiarity is bound to make even the most undeterred of us feel unsettled. This is why it is important to make your newly found space feel like a home away from home.
We recommend a few items of sentimental value or a possession that ties you to home life. Framed photographs are also a brilliant way of introducing a sense of familiarity into a not-so familiar space.
